Most health insurance has a waiting period, either for 60 or 90 days. This especially applies for pre-existing conditions. However, if you do have a condition and you are changing to a new policy, you simply can’t forgo healthcare just because your coverage is not available for a few months.
The National Association of Health Underwriters discusses the options that patients could choose: “a policy at a more expensive rate with coverage and a pre-existing condition waiting period or a cheaper policy with no waiting period that excludes the condition coverage.”
There are times when you may choose no waiting period health insurance for a couple of different reasons.
If you do choose no waiting period health insurance, then you will most likely be responsible for the costs of treating your pre-existing condition. This is usually the best option if your condition is easily managed with medication. For example, if you have allergies, you will probably be willing to pay for your medication on your own in order to get insurance coverage right away.
